Light:Minute The time is the distance

Light Minute

The time is the distance. Midnight is here, where you are standing, and every minute after it is one more light-minute out. At 04:10 you are as far from home as Neptune, and by 23:46 you are out with Voyager 1, which is the furthest anything made on Earth has ever been. A full turn of this dial is 1440 light-minutes, which is one light-day exactly.

The picture rides that light out, looking back at home. Earth gets smaller all day, and everything you pass comes out of the screen and falls away behind you.

Every distance is a long-term average rather than tonight's sky, and the spacecraft are where they were in 2026. Nothing here is a photograph: each body is drawn from a handful of numbers, so the picture is computed the same way the distance is. Move the mouse to turn it.

You can set an alarm here or use Moon Rise to fall asleep to something quieter.
