The Common Yellowthroat is a small New World warbler with olive-brown upperparts, a bright yellow throat and chest, and a short bill. Adult males are distinctive in breeding season thanks to a bold black face mask bordered above with gray or white, while females and immature birds lack the mask or have only a faint one. These birds are often found in low, dense vegetation such as marshes, shrubs, and brushy wetlands, where they move quietly and can be heard more often than seen.
Habitat & behavior
Common yellowthroats breed widely across much of North America, from southern Canada through the United States and into central Mexico. Northern populations migrate southward in winter, while birds in warmer regions may remain year-round. They forage close to the ground, typically gleaning insects and other small invertebrates from thick cover.
Songs and Calls
These warblers are vocal and conspicuous by sound. Males sing a rapid, repetitive phrase often transcribed as “witchity-witchity-witchity”, which they use to defend territory and attract mates. Both sexes also use a variety of short call notes, including sharp chip or “chek” sounds when alarmed or communicating with other birds.
Fun fact
Brown-headed Cowbirds commonly lay their eggs in Common Yellowthroat nests, a strategy known as brood parasitism that puts the yellowthroats at a disadvantage. Yellowthroats often try to fight back by abandoning nests with foreign eggs, or by starting over and building a new nest right on top of the old one. But as you can see in the video below, that’s not always the case — this yellowthroat was observed feeding a young cowbird anyway.
